![]() ![]() Fraternal twins - Iris and Malina - have grown up with their overbearing and magical mother, Jasmina. But the first main difference is that the plot moves along at a good pace in Ava Lavender, and here it plods. It's one of my favourite whimsical and charming reads. I was expecting something more along the lines of The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender when I went into this book. These books just don't seem to be for me. Books that describe the scents of fruit and flowers in every scene, floating on a wave of purple prose. Books like Caraval and The Star-Touched Queen. Some books come with dreamy descriptions that focus in detail on the senses. ![]() It's not the first time I've talked about this. On the other hand, I feel like this book will be an all time favourite for a different type of reader. It just goes to show that having beautiful, poetic writing and an exciting setting in Montenegro cannot make up for a plot that takes forever to go anywhere. I've mostly been reading it during the day whilst on vacation so I'm neither tired nor grumpy, but I could feel my eyes trying to close as they moved through the pages of snoozeworthy text. I'm upping my rating to two stars, and yet this book was so painfully slow and boring. In some ways, I feel like I'm being generous. ![]() ![]() The main character is weak, but he uses his brain to fight people stronger than him, relying on tricks and manipulation. ![]() His clan even keeps him around and doesn't treat him that badly. Occasionally the dialogue sounded a little forced to me. In fact sometimes they go from bad to worse before they get better. The book shows a young couple trying to live God’s way but that doesn’t mean everything always goes right. What I liked was that it showed even when a couple is in love, marriage will not always go smoothly and there will be times when communication breaks down and people respond to events in different ways. Bible verses and relationship with God run throughout the book, even though not all the characters who claim to be Christian at times portray the best character traits. It is Christian fiction and as such contains a strong faith theme. Christy’s reactions resonated more with me than the way Todd did to the problems they faced. I felt the situation when things start to fall apart, despite trying to follow God, was conveyed well. Christy works at time in a bookshop and Todd is a youth minister. ![]() I quickly got into the story, largely because some of the issues and challenges facing Christy and Todd were familiar to me through the situations of family and friends involved in ministry. It didn’t matter that I had not read the earlier books. Unlike a lot of people I had not read any of the Christy Miller series as a teenager, so I came to this with no knowledge of the two main characters, Christy and Todd, her husband of not quite two years. ![]() ![]() Would you like to see more articles like this?
